Personalize Prediction in CLL
CLL is a malignancy of B lymphocytes and the most common adult leukemia in the West. CLL exhibits remarkable clinical heterogeneity, ranging from extremely indolent with no treatment requirement and a life expectancy almost similar to that of an aged-matched, unaffected population, to extremely aggressive, characterized by refractoriness to standard treatment and associated with drastically reduced overall survival. Despite the plethora of therapeutic choices currently available, CLL is incurable, thus, it exhibits a behavior of a chronic disease. Due to the fact that CLL predominantly affects the elderly population and that for many patients the disease remains indolent, CLL patient management has largely adopted an active monitoring approach i.e. “watch and wait”. For those patients developing a need for therapy according to established clinical criteria, several options are available, with varying costs and efficacies.
What is personaCLLized?
The Research Program personaCLLized is a highly innovative project that aspires to face the high-challenging and timely problems related to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), by addressing specific research Objectives:
- The primary objective is to reinforce the ongoing attempt to take the next step towards personalized prediction. The personaCLLized will address this issue in a pioneering fashion within a multidisciplinary collaboration, proposing novel statistical predictive models to personalize the prediction of the need for treatment for the individual patient.
- Next, a dedicated statistical system will be developed to obtain insight into the prevalence and incidence of CLL in Greece. This system will monitor the Greek population of CLL patients at different states of disease evolution/progression, providing crucial information regarding the management of CLL patients.
- The third objective of personaCLLized is to elaborate a health assessment for the CLL patients, namely a plan of care that identifies the specific needs of a person and how those needs will be addressed efficiently by the healthcare system.
Funding & Hosting
The research project personaCLLized was supported by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) under the “2nd Call for H.F.R.I. Research Projects to support Post-Doctoral Researchers” (Project Number: 553). It is hosted with the Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.).
